Te Whakakaokao

Te Whakakaokao is the Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Reo Māori Working Group, responsible for updating and maintaining the list of Māori Subject Headings.

Kaupapa / Foundation of Māori Subject Headings

Ngā Upoko Tukutuku is a thesaurus of searchable subject headings in te reo Māori that is designed to improve access to taonga in libraries and archival repositories. Originally developed to help cataloguers and descriptive archivists describe Māori materials, Ngā Upoko Tukutuku has been especially created to link students, researchers and communities to taonga using Māori concepts familiar to them.

Ngā Upoko Tukutuku employs a Mātauranga Māori framework and contains commonly used words and phrases in te reo that are widely understood across Aotearoa. Its name derives from the activity of weaving a tukutuku panel and serves as a metaphor to describe how the words are woven into the structure of the thesaurus, how Te Whakakaokao weaves together different strands of knowledge, and how the thesaurus guides people to appropriate terms.

Purpose

The role of Te Whakakaokao is to develop new headings for the thesaurus and resolve issues with existing headings. Te Whakakaokao takes its direction from the Māori Subject Headings Governance Group, a group made up of a collective representing LIANZA, Te Rōpū Whakahau and the National Library of New Zealand. Additionally, Te Whakakaokao will occasionally provide intellectual support to the Kaipūkōrero Ngā Upoko Tukutuku/Māori Subject Headings Researcher. The Kaipūkōrero Ngā Upoko Tukutuku/Māori Subject Headings Researcher is a contract role, to which, funds permitting, a person is hired by LIANZA on behalf of the Governance Group.

As of July 2019 the Governance Group members are:

  • Cellia Joe-Olsen (Te Rōpū Whakahau)

  • Anahera Morehu (LIANZA)

  • Dale Cousens (National Library of New Zealand)

Membership

The number of members of the Group is not fixed, but is expected to be between six and eight.

Te Whakakaokao shall consist of:

  • a minimum of four reo Māori contributors appointed by the Māori Subject Headings Governance Group

  • up to three cataloguing and/or indexing staff from the National Library of New Zealand, with one of the three being the Group's Facilitator

  • the Kaipūkōrero Ngā Upoko Tukutuku/Māori Subject Headings Researcher

There is no specified membership term; this is at the discretion of individual members and their employers.

Participants must have the approval of their employers; this will be negotiated between the employer and the Māori Subject Headings Governance Group.
