Bibliographic records of NDHA items in the NUC

A monthly service providing a file of bibliographic records for National Digital Heritage Archive (NDHA) items that have recently been added to the NZ National Union Catalogue (NUC). These are records for preserved New Zealand digital items that are freely available and can be downloaded directly into your catalogue.

Each MARC21 format record (with UTF-8 character encoding) includes a permanent link to the item in the NDHA so that, once included in your catalogue, your customers can quickly and easily access the digital item.

This is a free service.

Initial files

Four files of bibliographic records for items added to the NUC from the NDHA. This covers the period from November 2008 (when the NDHA started) to the end of October 2011 (when this service started):

Synchronising records with the NUC

The NZ National Union Catalogue (NUC) is kept up to date by synchronising its bibliographic records and holdings statements with those from member libraries and the OCLC's WorldCat.

Batch loading

Bibliographic records and holding statements of member libraries are batchloaded to the NZ National Union Catalogue (NUC) on a regular basis by the National Library. This service is included as part of the Te Puna membership fee.

Information about the service is available in the policy on batch loading of catalogue records and their holdings from New Zealand libraries. To discuss having your library's records batch loaded, please contact Te Puna services.

Batch loading using OSMOSIS

OSMOSIS is a database processing software, developed by The Marc of Quality (TMQ), which enables holdings from your library's catalogue to be moved across to the NUC with very little effort on your part. OSMOSIS uses ‘sequential snapshots’ of your library’s catalogue to identify additions and deletions of material held. Criteria for participating in OSMOSIS includes the ability to provide a MARC record export.

OSMOSIS is available to Te Puna members for an additional cost. For more information, please contact Te Puna services.

Synchronising NUC records with WorldCat

The NUC's records are synchronised with OCLC's WorldCat on a nightly basis. This service is included as part of the Te Puna membership fee.

Enhanced tables of contents for selected records

The National Library supplies table of contents data for selected New Zealand and Pacific records - currently for monographs published between 2005 and 2009. These can be downloaded in Dewey-sequenced files.

Table of contents data is now added on all new cataloguing records and will be available through the NUC.

Supply of MARC records

We can supply MARC records to member libraries who are moving from a non-MARC to MARC library system, and want to import records to improve the quality of their OPACs.

We can also supply records to non-member libraries.

To discuss your requirements, please contact Te Puna services.

Email discussion list

As part of the Te Puna membership package, members can join the TePuna-L email discussion list. This enables members to share information and discuss matters relating to Te Puna services, and be notified of the release of new records files.
