Web Deposit Tool
The National Library's digital collections are built from content that comes to us from Legal Deposit, donations and bequests. Content deposited is assessed against our collections policies before being permanently preserved in the National Digital Heritage Archive (NDHA).
The Web Deposit Tool lets publishers, individuals and organisations deposit digital content across the internet to the National Library and Alexander Turnbull Library, assisting us to collect and preserve New Zealand's digital heritage.

The tool accepts files up to 100MB in size, but please keep in mind that files of this size may take a very long time to upload over the Internet, depending on your Internet connection.
If you want to regularly deposit files larger than this limit, please contact us and we will give you tools and advice to do this. Email: NDHA@natlib.govt.nz.
Collection policy
Please note that not all donations are accepted. We review them against National Library and Alexander Turnbull Library collection policies.
You can check your material against our collection policies before sending it to us.

Deposit returns
It is NDHA standard practice not to return items deposited via the web. We recommend you do not delete items from your own system until receiving confirmation from us that your material has been accepted into the Library's collections.
Legal Deposit
If your organisation regularly publishes Legal Deposit material we can make it easy by modifying the Web Deposit Tool to run automatically or semi-automatically.
Legal Deposit is the legal requirement for publishers to make publications available to the National Library. A publisher can be an individual, a club, church, incorporated society or organisation as well as a commercial publisher.
Websites, electronic publications and recordings are included in Legal Deposit.
Alternatives to the tool
If you have a large file or several files to deposit there are other ways that you may wish to give them to us.
If the content is a publication you wish to submit for Legal Deposit
- Email a copy of a publication that is posted on a website to electronic-legal-deposit@natlib.govt.nz
- Tell us when you post a new or revised publication by emailing electronic-legal-deposit@natlib.govt.nz
- Add electronic-legal-deposit@natlib.govt.nz to electronic mailing lists for newsletters and other publications published and distributed electronically.
