Papanui School Library, Christchurch

Papanui is a decile 5 school with a roll of just under 200 pupils. Completed in 2006, the new library was a collaboration between the school, PTA, architects and National Library advisers.

Entering the library is a creative experience as the foyer area features a thematic display of colourful sea creature artwork by pupils.

The open plan library engages pupils with designated activity and learning spaces: Read, Research, Listen and Learn. The design utilises curves and non square spaces in the library’s architectural design. Examples include the issue desk and the Learn space.

The Listen area features a listening post with wireless headphones. Read is a recreational reading space. Pupils can relax and read in natural light and on comfortable bean bags, reinforced with double stitching and industrial canvas. The Research area contains a cluster of 8 PCs to allow classes to engage in specific online research. The Learn section is used for class reading.

A heat pump keeps the library cool in summer and warm in winter. Blinds can be lowered when using the library’s ceiling mounted data projector. Considered use of natural light has also been planned. The library’s upper windows also capture and frame several large old trees that are a feature of the school grounds.

The library also boasts a good size workroom with plenty of storage. Other library features include carpet titles that can be easily replaced, modular tables, mobile seating as well as prominent face out displays of books.

There are plans to extend the library by creating an outside reading area that will be enjoyed by students on sunny days.
