East Taieri School Library, Dunedin
The building which houses the East Taieri School library incorporates a novel and flexible approach to the school's space requirements. The library is part of a multipurpose building that also incorporates the staff room and a performing arts/physical education/assembly hall area. The library is separated from the performing arts area by a series of soundproof screen doors. These can be pulled back to increase the space of the performing venue by incorporating the library area for audience seating.
The library contains bright attractive furniture. An example is the composite, versatile tables. They can be used on their own (for displays) or arranged together (as the photographs illustrate) to form a larger single activity area. There is also a large cushioned area for relaxed reading by the French doors. These doors lead to an outside patio area, which is used on fine days for associated reading and library activities.
Library chairs are deliberately adult size (which the children love) to allow for multi use. The library has wireless ICT access, and separate room space for processing library materials. Complementing the collection is pupils' artwork, which adorns the library walls.
