Balaclava School Library, Dunedin
This attractive primary library is highly used and valued by teaching staff and pupils for its practical reading, recreation and working environment. The library's place within the school is integral: "Our modern school library creates an environment where children choose to read for enjoyment."
The library's simple design incorporates an up-to-date and stimulating collection of resources. Books are profiled and promoted via attractive face out displays while shelving has deliberately been kept low and mobile to allow for the repurposing of the library's interior for a range of flexible learning experiences.
Furniture is both colourful and attractive. The bench space at the issue end of the library is for students and teachers to use their laptops as the library has wifi. The other end of the library features a charming illustration by children's illustrator, Robyn Belton (and Greedy Cat) that celebrates the ethos of the library. Attractive art by Balaclava School students lines the walls.
The library was opened on 5 August 2006.
