If you are publishing printed music, such as a score or a part, you may include an International Standard Music Number (ISMN). ISMN are available free of charge to New Zealand publishers. They are provided by the National ISMN Agency of New Zealand, operating within the National Library.
Publications eligible for ISMN
ISMN may be used for each part of a publication that is separately available. Items to be numbered include:
- scores (miniature (study) scores, vocal scores)
- parts (sets of parts, and individual parts available separately)
- pop folios
- anthologies
- other media that are an integral component of a publication of printed music (for example, a tape recording that is one of the parts of a composition)
- song texts or lyrics published with the printed music (if available separately)
- commentaries published with the printed music (if available separately)
- song books (optional)
- microform music publications
- Braille music publications
- electronic publications of musical notations.
Publications ineligible for ISMN
ISMN are not issued to these types of music publication:
- books on music, as these receive an ISBN (International Standard Book Number)
- standalone sound or video recordings (including recordings available on computer media)
- periodicals and series as a whole (as distinct from individual volumes in series), as these receive an ISSN (International Standard Serial Number).

You can request an ISMN by phoning, writing, faxing or emailing us with the details of your music
publication. We will process your
application within two working days.
