Joining the Cataloguing-in-Publication (CiP) programme

The Cataloguing-in-Publication (CiP) programme is for publishers who are publishing books on a regular basis in New Zealand. Small publishing firms are welcome to join if they are publishing on behalf of two or more authors on a yearly basis.

International publishers can join the programme if the book is published in New Zealand and not just distributed here.

If you are an author publishing your own book, you will not be eligible for the CiP programme, but we will catalogue your book once we receive it through Legal Deposit.

The catalogue record goes onto the National Bibliographic Database and in the New Zealand National Bibliography.

Eligible publications

  • new or revised books on all subjects that will be published in New Zealand
  • reprinted books that were previously published by a different publisher
  • maps and atlases that will be published in New Zealand.

Ineligible publications

  • works that have already been published
  • books reprinted by the same publishing company. For example, a paperback version of a hardback book where the text remains the same.
  • specialised publications that are ephemeral in nature, such as calendars, diaries, telephone directories, audio-visual material, multimedia kits

Applying for a CiP record

We recommend you apply for a CiP record three months ahead of publication. The earlier you apply, the more likely you are to receive pre-publication orders. We will return the CiP data to you within three working days.

Once you are a member of the CiP programme, you can apply for a CiP record online, or by sending us a printed copy of the application form by mail or fax. Please complete a separate form for each title.
