About Signed Java Applet
The signed Java Applet is a program created by the Library. It allows you to select your publication's files and submit them to the Library. The program automatically checks the consistency of the files received to ensure successful file transmission. This program uses Java Security to safeguard the information. It has been digitally signed by the Library to further assure you of security and authenticity.
To run the Java Applet you will need to run the latest Java software. The following link takes you to a website that will verify the existence and/or version of Java running on your computer. It also provides links to download the latest versions:
Using Signed Java Applet
The first time you use this Applet, you will be asked to accept the Library's security certificate. A response of 'Yes' or 'Always' will allow you to proceed. Using the signed Java Applet is a two-step process:
Step one
- Use the top box to select and submit your file(s) to the Library.
- Click Add to select your files.
- Highlight and click Move up and/or Move down to change the order of a file.
- Highlight and click Del to remove a file.
- It is very important that you submit the files in exactly the same order that they appear in the publication.
Step two
- Click Upload to submit your files to the Library. The files will show in the bottom box.
- Note you can remove an uploaded file by highlighting and clicking Remove uploaded file.
HTML Upload Form
This method is for users who are unable to run the Java Applet. The process is more manual than the signed Java Applet method, but the files are still securely sent to the server and take no longer to transfer. To ensure the files are delivered perfectly, you may want to run a manual MD5 checksum on the files. The checksums can be entered at the time you add each file.
MD5 checksum
A MD5 checksum is a way of checking that the data you send to the Library is exactly the same as the data the Library receives. The software runs an algorithm across the file before you send it and produces a number. When the Library receives the file, the checksum is recalculated. Any change to the number is a signal that there has been a problem during transmission. If you are using the HTML upload method, you may wish to run a manual MD5 checksum on the files. There are free versions of MD5 checksum software available. You can use any MD5 checksum routine you want as long as it produces a hex encoded MD5 checksum for each individual file. E.g. WinMd5Sum for Windows.
