Full standard cataloguing

We create full standard catalogue records for most material in the heritage and General Collections. Items in the Alexander Turnbull Library Special Printed Collections and Cartographic Collection are catalogued using special rules for those types of material.

Augmented cataloguing

For some types of material we add extra information to the full standard catalogue record.  We create these augmented catalogue records for the following collections and materials.

  • Schools and Print Disabilities Collections – we add genre headings and summary notes.
  • Dorothy Neal White Collection – we add genre headings, and there is an extra focus on illustrators.
  • Māori material – we pay special attention to subject headings, and add headings from Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku Māori Subject Headings and the Iwi-Hapū Names List where appropriate.
  • Music – we give a full listing of tracks for all sound recordings and full contents notes for printed music.

Minimal level cataloguing

We apply this level of cataloguing to a limited group of low priority materials. Records follow the requirements of full standard cataloguing, with the following exceptions.

  • Notes and physical descriptions are more limited than in full standard cataloguing.
  • Subject headings are not assigned to records for Standards New Zealand standards.
  • One subject heading is assigned to each record for materials other than Standards New Zealand standards.

Cataloguing in Publication (CiP)

We create pre-publication records for some types of material.  These records follow the requirements of full standard records, with the exception of physical descriptions, and are based on information received from the publisher. Records are upgraded to full standard once the publication is received.
