Anne McCahon

Anne McCahon’s illustrations appeared regularly in the School Journal in the 1950s. Her playful drawings contrast with the precision of the work of other illustrators at the time, such as Russell Clark and E Mervyn Taylor.

In 1953 Anne McCahon, her husband painter Colin McCahon and their four children moved to Auckland, where Colin took a job at the Auckland Art Gallery. Anne McCahon has trained at art school alongside Colin, and contribute drawings to the School Journal under the encouragement of art editor Roy Cowan. The commissions were a significant opportunity to add to the family’s income.

McCahon contributed regularly to the Journal for eight years, producing over 50 illustrations in 1955 alone. From 1959, when Roy Cowan left the School Journal, McCahon's contributions decreased, although her work continued to appear as late as 1975.
