Turners and Growers displaying coloured Kiwifruit in Asia
The New Zealand kiwifruit industry began in 1904 when Wanganui teacher Miss Isabel Fraser brought seeds back from a trip to China. Traditionally known as the Chinese gooseberry, the fruit was renamed Kiwifruit for export marketing reasons in the 1950s.
This cartoon by Ashley Smith depicts the Kiwifruit industry and the dominance of Zespri in the export market. It refers to Turners and growers displaying coloured kiwifruit in Asia and also challenging Zespri’s exclusive marketing status.
