Gum diggers spearing for Kauri gum

The Kauri gum industry was one of New Zealand’s largest export industries from 1870 to 1920 and encouraged the influx of gum diggers to Auckland and Northland areas. This photograph taken by the Northwood Bros shows gum diggers using the spear and hook method of searching for gum in a swamp somewhere in the Northland Region in about 1910.
