Gold mining
The discovery of gold in the Coromandel and the South Island led to a series of gold rushes and the establishment of what soon became a major industry. This photograph of a group of gold miners was taken at Waitekauri, near Waihi in the Coromandel. Circa 1900. This area still maintains an active gold mining industry.
