Living and learning in Thorndon

Three notable girls schools are located in Thorndon; St. Mary's College, Wellington Girls' College and Queen Margaret College.

In this image Wellington Girls' College students perform Swedish drill on parents' day in 1927. The teacher responsible for their accomplished style was Lucy Taylor (1891-1989). A Fellow of the British College of Physical Education, Taylor was a Thorndon resident and sports mistress at the school from 1922 to 1950. Her colourful annual dance dramas and gymnastic performances, held in the Town Hall, attracted large public audiences and were a fundraising source for the school over many years.
