Wellington's oldest pub, the Thistle Inn

The Thistle Inn in Mulgrave Street is Thorndon's oldest pub. Built in 1840 and damaged by fire in 1866, the pub was repaired and parts of the original building still exist. Before reclamation of the foreshore in 1876 the hotel stood close to the shoreline and was popular with sailors who could make a quick dash from the bar to their boats if necessary.

The Thistle Inn featured in Katherine Mansfield's short story Leves Amores, written in 1907 when the author was in her late teens. The story's erotic content, which suggests an affair between two women, scandalised Mansfield's family and friends.
