Thorndon Artists

Thorndon has attracted many artists, both as a subject and as a place to live. Among those who made it their home were painters Rita Angus, Evelyn Page and Helen Crabb (Barc). Other notable artists who painted Thorndon include Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947) who in 1904 ran a teaching studio in Bowen Street, where she had gone to live with her mother after three years living and working in Europe.

The watercolour by Hodgkins shown here depicts Wellington from the vantage point of Everton Terrace. The tower above the bush in the foreground is old Government House. The large building with the many hipped roof is Parliament; this building was destroyed by fire in 1907.
