'And do you agree to split assets, time-share children, 'til divorce do you part?', 2004
Alistair Nisbet's cartoons regularly satirise New Zealand's pressing political and social issues.
Like the 19th century cartoonists showcased in this exhibition, Nisbet here refers to the church as an upholder of the sacrament of marriage. But at a time of unprecedented divorce rates, the priest has updated the wedding vows. He acknowledges that the union between this already warring couple will only last 'til divorce do you part'.
The cartoon is Nisbet's response to an article about the high divorce rates in Christchurch that was published in The Press in 2004. Nisbet's cartoons are published in the same newspaper.
