Craig Potton
Craig Potton is a photographer-conservationist who chases the beauty in the land. His photographs of Lake Manapouri offer an call to arms through affirming the power and mystery of nature.
Potton leaves the documentation of the damaged landscape to other artists. His evocative photographs work to inspire viewers to seek a deeper appreciation of the land, and to accept a greater responsibility for it.
As an enviromental campaigner, Potton has taken more direct action. He organised the local petition to 'Save Manapouri' while at Nelson College in the late 1960s. His photographs of Lake Manapouri celebrate the 'Save Manapouri' campaign, and act as a reminder that the public must stay aware of the need to protect our environment.
Potton worked as a photographer on The Lord of the Rings film series. Middle Earth was partially created from his photographs of the Manapouri region.
