C D Barraud's 'Lake Manapouri looking towards Cathedral Peaks'
Wellington artist Charles Decimus Barraud (1822-1897) travelled widely around New Zealand, seeking scenes of picturesque beauty. He visited Lake Manapouri with his sketchbook in 1871. Through the 1880s he worked up many of these sketches into oil paintings.
Lake Manapouri looking towards Cathedral Peaks shows off the late-afternoon atmospheric effects Barraud is best known for. The sun breaks through heavy clouds. Rays of light pierce the dramatic environment where the towering Cathedral Peaks overlooks the majestic lake and rocky foreshore. This painting offers a clear expression of the artist finding the divine in nature.
This painting entered the Alexander Turnbull Library in very poor condition. It had dents, stains, punctures and tears. The exhibition 'Manapouri: Art, Power, Protest' provided an opportunity to have restoration work carried out on the painting. Barraud's landscape has now been restored to its full majesty.
