Makereti's memorial
Makereti died in England on 16 April 1930. She was buried, as she wished, at her local parish church, St Andrew's in Oddington, Oxfordshire, despite requests from her sister Bella and others that her body be returned to New Zealand. In 1931 a memorial to Makereti was unveiled in Whakarewarewa.
Interest in Makereti's life continues. Her thesis The Old-Time Maori received new attention when it was republished in the 1980s, and a new biography of Makereti by Paul Diamond, Makereti: Taking Māori to the World, was published in 2007.
Items from Makereti's collection of taonga (treasures) have pride of place at the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford. Makereti's grave in Oxford also attracts visitors from New Zealand and overseas.
