Makereti at Oxford

In early 1927 Makereti became a student at the University of Oxford, enrolling as a diploma student in anthropology and studying for a Bachelor of Science degree at the same time. Her studies were interrupted by illness, and she died on 7 May 1930, shortly before her thesis was to be presented to the University.

Makereti's thesis was published as The Old-Time Maori in 1938. Her recollections of her childhood are central to the book, which describes traditional Māori life. The Old-Time Maori was re-published by the New Women's Press in 1986.

You can read a digitised copy of Makereti's thesis on the New Zealand Electronic Text Centre's website.
