During her visit with her performing group to England in 1911, Makereti became engaged to Richard Staples-Browne, whose family was part of the English gentry. The pair had met when Staples-Browne visited Rotorua around 1907 and the tour provided the opportunity for them to renew their friendship.
Despite Makereti's efforts to keep it secret, news of the engagement appeared in the media while she was returning to New Zealand.
The couple married in a London registry office on 12 June 1912 and Makereti became Margaret Staples-Browne. However, the marriage did not last, and in 1923 Makereti filed for divorce.
