Meeting of the artist and Hongi at the Bay of Islands, November 1827
Alexander Turnbull wrote in May 1893 that ‘Anything whatever relating to this Colony, on its history, flora, fauna, geology & inhabitants, will be fish for my net, from as early a date as possible until now.’ Augustus Earle’s masterpiece Meeting of the artist and Hongi at the Bay of Islands, November 1827 is an excellent example of the important works of art that Alexander Turnbull acquired and then donated to the nation on his death in 1918. The work commemorates artist Augustus Earle's meeting with the wounded chief Hongi Hika. Hongi had fought without his armour, supplied by King George IV, and had been wounded by a ball in the chest. He was to die the following year.
