Return of the Māori Pioneer Battalion
The Māori Pioneer Battalion, which had served in the Middle East and on the Western Front, received a rousing welcome on its return to New Zealand.
The Pioneer Battalion was the only battalion to return to New Zealand as a complete unit. A number of parades and receptions took place throughout the country to celebrate their efforts. At Putiki Pa in Wanganui, they returned to joyous scenes where the Moutoa flag, presented to the region in 1865, formed the centrepiece of proceedings.
