Food, glorious food

Sanitarium Health Food Company

Edward Halsey, a Seventh-day Adventist and baker, founded the Sanitarium Health Food Company and made many New Zealand favourites. This photograph shows three of the company’s products – Frucerea Essence, Nuttolene and Marmite.

Records and Archives Week

Records and Archives Week (1-7 May) is an Archives and Records Association of New Zealand (ARANZ) initiative, which promotes the value of records, archives and associated professionals in New Zealand.

The theme for Records and Archives Week 2011 is “From the hangi pit to the Weetbix kid: Recording the history of food”. The way we gather, produce, prepare, distribute and consume food has changed dramatically over time. Food is intimately related to our sense of identity and what it means to be a New Zealander. Archives and records are an important means of documenting the impact of food on our daily lives.

It is important that these records are preserved for future generations. In support of this year’s theme the Alexander Turnbull Library is showcasing a small selection of items from our unpublished collections that celebrate and reflect this theme.
