The International Children's Digital Library's online collection includes children's books selected and digitised by the National Library.
About the International Children's Digital Library
The books reflect the similarities and differences in cultures, societies, interests, and lifestyles of people from around the world.
New Zealand was among the few countries to have books included in the ICDL when it was launched in November 2002.
The first five books to be digitised dated from 1892 to 1947, and were mainly of historical interest. Librarians from around New Zealand then selected another 140 books to be included and the National Library sought permission from the copyright-holders. In late 2005 – early 2006 the Library added 43 more books to the ICDL.
The books were digitised at the Heritage Materials Imaging Facility. We are grateful to the authors, illustrators and publishers who agreed to have their books included.
New Zealand entries are introduced below, or you can visit the International Children’s Digital Library website.
