The Robert and Mary Hogg Bequest of a collection of Scottish literature, history and topography was donated to the Library in 1941. Robert Hogg (1864-1941) was born in Blochairn, Glasgow, Scotland. He arrived in New Zealand with his wife and family in 1900. A socialist, journalist, newspaper editor and poet, he retained his connection with his birthplace through a life-long interest in Scottish literature, amassing a library of over 2000 volumes (1178 titles). Hogg also wrote several books in prose and verse under the pseudonym of Robert Blochairn.
In addition to Scottish literature, there are books on the history and topography of Scotland. Particular strengths are the works of James Hogg, the Ettrick shepherd, with many first editions, and the works of Robert Burns including the first Edinburgh edition of Burn’s poems issued in 1787. This last item is now shelved in the Turnbull rare book collection. Samuel Rutherford Crockett is also well represented.
