A Regional Approach to Identifying Items of National Significance Held by Small Cultural Institutions in New Zealand: a research report
In 2003-04 the National Library funded a research project at the School of Information Management , Victoria University of Wellington. The purpose of the research was to develop an adaptable toolkit that might be used on a regional basis in a variety of collaborative projects to identify items of national significance within collections held by small cultural institutions in New Zealand. Interlibrary Loan Services in New Zealand: An Environmental Scan and National Survey
The National Library of New Zealand and the Joint Standing Committee on Interloan commissioned a report from the School of Information Management at Victoria University to identify trends in interlibrary loan, both within New Zealand and internationally.
This report consists of two parts: an environmental scan and literature review, and the results from a survey of participants in the New Zealand interlibrary loan scheme.
This survey was undertaken in August/September 2004. Additional information was obtained through discussions with senior National Library staff, and representatives of the New Zealand library community.
Digital Library Development Review
With the passing of the National Library of New Zealand (Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa) Act 2003 the National Library of New Zealand has been afforded the opportunity to look strategically at its approach to the management of electronic material through the development of a digital library for both born digital objects and digital objects created through the Library's digitisation programme. Through this work it has become clear that preservation of digital materials will be a significant new requirement within the Library. The purpose of the digital library review was to either validate current progress or highlight areas of deficiency in the Library's efforts to incorporate digital material into the Library's core business including their long term storage and preservation.
A comparative review of common user interface software products for libraries
In 2002 the National Library funded a 550 level Master of Library and Information Studies paper at the School of Information Management, Victoria University of Wellington. The paper, on common user interface software, has been presented in fulfillment of that course and is now available here. Economic valuation: National Bibliographic Database and National Union Catalogue
In May 2002 the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa commissioned McDermott Miller Limited to research and measure the national economic benefit of the National Bibliographic Database (“NBD”), the National Union Catalogue (“NUC”) and their access, identification and supply functions. The National Library’s commission included a brief, which defined the purpose, objectives and scope of the valuation project.
Survey of digitisation in New Zealand
The National Library commissioned a survey and report on digitisation in New Zealand in 2001. Results of a Survey of Digitisation Activities in New Zealand' provides information on: types of organisations involved in digitisation; materials being digitised and user groups being served; why organisation digitise and how they are collaborating; what technical and metadata standards are used.
National Library Visitor Survey - Winter 2006
This report outlines the findings of a survey of visitors to the National Library Wellington conducted from 12th – 24th June 2006. The report provides: A clear picture of the profile of visitors attending the Library in Wellington; Successes and areas for improvement in relation to service delivery; Data to support output performance indicators reported in the National Library's 05/06 Statement of Intent; Robust data capable of comparison across past and future years.
Access to Science Information Produced in New Zealand: A research report
This report was commissioned by the Library Resources Committee of the Trustees of the National Library, given their perception of a growing concern among the library and wider information community, researchers and others, about 'providing equity of access to information', particularly access to science information produced in New Zealand. The research involved three phases - an environmental scan that focused on the broad issue of availability of science information; identifying gaps in collection and preservation, and barriers to accessing science information; ensuring ease of access, now and in the future.
An Evaluation of the Cultural Property Pilot Project Wairarapa - 1999
Te Arotake I Te Kaupapa Tiaki Te Mauri o Te Matauranga - Wairarapa. This report is an evaluation of the cultural property pilot project that was carried out in partnership between two iwi in the Wairarapa, Rangitane o Wairarapa and Ngati Kahungungu ki Wairarapa and Alexander Turnbull Library during 1997 and 1998. The project aimed to improve access to material held within the Alexander Turnbull Library and improve relationships with iwi.
Information Literacy in New Zealand Secondary and Primary Schools - 2001
This report looks at what is happening now with information literacy in New Zealand schools and what is required to further develop these skills. The report is based on random surveys of secondary and primary schools in August 2000. The report contributes to the body of research relating to information literacy.

Developments in Public Library Services: A Survey of New Zealand Public Libraries
This report outlines the findings of a survey conducted in September 2005 with public libraries around the country. The survey builds on a survey of the same name conducted in 2001. This research reflects a joint approach by the National Library of New Zealand and the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) to strengthening information which demonstrates the value of New Zealand libraries.
Public Sector Readiness for Digital Preservation
The primary goal of this research project was to investigate the current state of readiness for digital preservation within New Zealand’s core public sector organisations. The survey provides a base level of knowledge on current digital preservation practices and public sector awareness of key digital preservation factors and might be used to guide national priorities or actions to solve current digital preservation problems.
While based on overseas models the survey is unique in its focus on core government sector organisations. The survey was distributed to 92 core public sector organisations including public sector departments, crown agencies, district health boards and crown research institutes, and covered such areas as current digital activity, organisational incentives, preservation policies, perceived threats to digital material etc.

This report:
- positions institutional research repositories in the wider national and global environments, and presents the rationale and business case for investment
- defines the programme of work currently envisaged and examines the cultural changes required to establish a repository framework
- describes the kinds of technology changes that will be required and examines the software options available
- proposes actions to take the programme forward to the next stage.
