Flexible working hours
Library staff work 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Wherever possible you have the opportunity of working flexible hours, whereby you may start work at any time between 7am and 9.30am and finish for the day between 3.30pm and 6pm.
Family friendly workplace
We support staff with family responsibilities. We welcome visits by family members to the workplace.
We provide leave that allows you to take time off to provide care and support to family members when necessary. This includes sick, domestic, bereavement, parental and special (with or without pay) leave.
Capability development
Our goal is that all staff access training to develop their professional capability and generic work skills.
Professional and technical training opportunities will ensure you have 21st century knowledge and skills capability. Study assistance helps you to undertake tertiary study relevant to your profession, to enhance your ability to be effective in your job and to prepare you for future jobs.
Union
The Public Service Association (PSA) is the union that represents staff in matters relating to their employment. Membership is voluntary.

Networks
We recognise, encourage and support a number of internal networks that provide support for their members and contribute to improving EEO in the Library:

School holiday programme
We provide a subsidised school holiday programme run by experienced caregivers, for a week during each school holiday for the children of Wellington staff members. Similar financial support is provided to staff members outside of Wellington who place family in local holiday programmes in their area.
Banking package
As a permanent employee of the National Library you are able to personally benefit from a long-term association between the Government and Westpac, enjoying discounts on a range of banking products from a special employee banking package.
Sick leave as required
We support staff when they are prevented from attending work by illness or accident. Permanent staff may take reasonable time off as required on full pay.
Employee assistance programme (EAP)
EAP is available to all who work for us and aims to help deal with personal and work issues that can affect work performance. The service is independent, confidential and free, for short to medium term counselling.
Eye tests
The Library will reimburse employees the cost of a standard vision test to a maximum of one test a year. where the test reveals the need for corrective eyewear or a change of prescription to existing eyewear the Library will reimburse up to $300 towards the cost of this.
Paid parental leave
The Government’s 14 weeks of parental leave payments applies to our staff. In addition, a staff member who is entitled to parental leave of up to 12 months, and who returns to work and completes at least a further six months' service, qualifies for an exgratia payment.
