Our introductory group tours will help you make the most of your research trip to the National Library and Alexander Turnbull Library. We offer:

  • Reference Services tours, for National Library collections and services
  • Alexander Turnbull Library tours, for Turnbull Library collections and services
  • Bilingual tours for Māori groups.

Our staff will organise tours tailored to the topics that interest your group. You will be introduced to the collections and services in both Reference Services and the Turnbull Library that will support your research topics.

We can also arrange tours for Library and Information Studies students, for work experience, and for people interested in the structure of our building.

Booking a tour

Contact us two weeks in advance of the date you would like to visit. The maximum group size for a tour is 15, although groups of up to 30 can be accommodated by splitting the group in two.

Reference Services tours

Tours can be arranged for the following:

  • Family history area
  • Māori resources
  • Children’s literature - for research involving the Dorothy Neal White Collection and the National Children’s Collection
  • Government publications
  • All resources on the ground floor Reference Services.

Alexander Turnbull Library tours

  • Tours can be arranged for the following:
  • Alexander Turnbull Library Research Centre
  • Alexander Turnbull Library unpublished collections
  • Turnbull Library Pictures
  • Newspaper room.

Bilingual tours

Tours for iwi groups are run by staff fluent in te reo Māori. We also have te reo Māori speakers and dedicated Māori Reference Services staff who can help you get started with your research.
