The government recognises that New Zealand's future prosperity depends on long-term sustainable strategies for the economy, society, environment, culture and our way of life.
The National Library has activities in the areas of waste minimisation, energy efficiency and transport. For example, our 2007/08 carbon footprint showed a 3% decrease on previous years. These actions will be assessed on the basis of their economic viability.
Our sustainability strategy is includes reports and plans, including an annual Green House Gas Emissions Inventory, the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan, and the Travel Plan, along with activities led by our Human Resources team.

The redevelopment of the National Library building in Wellington is an opportunity for substantial improvements in sustainability. We will integrate ecologically sustainable development principles into the refurbished building, where it is economically viable to do so.
