The National Library’s Collections Policy covers the National Library’s General and Schools collections and the Alexander Turnbull Library’s collections. The policy ensures that the significant record of New Zealand and Pacific cultural heritage/taonga is collected and preserved for all New Zealanders and is easily accessible.

The Collections Policy is also intended to inform other information providers of the direction that the National Library is committed to, so that both may collaborate in the cooperative development of New Zealanders' access to information.

The mandate for the Collections Policy is established by the National Library of New Zealand (Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa) Act 2003.
