The Policy and Information Democracy Directorate is made up of three business units: Policy; Planning, Research and Evaluation; and Information Strategy.
Policy
The Policy team provides
policy analysis, information and advice to the Minister Responsible for the
National Library and the Chief Executive.
This includes the development of the draft New Zealand Digital Content
Strategy, advice related to New Zealand's documentary heritage needs and public library policy.
The Policy team ensures the needs of the Library and Information Advisory Commission (LIAC) and the Guardians/Kaitiaki of the Alexander Turnbull Library (statutory bodies that advise the Minister) receive appropriate service.

Planning, Research and Evaluation
The Planning, Research and Evaluation team provides strategic and business planning to deliver the National Library’s Statement of Intent and other relevant strategic documents.
The team conducts research to inform policy development, planning and strategic development and ensures the effective evaluation of outputs and outcomes occurs.
The Information Centre is part of the Planning, Research and Evaluation team. The Information Centre is responsible for managing the National Libary's official paper and electronic files. The Information Centre also provides an information/advisory research service to senior management and staff, and manages the National Library intranet.
Information Strategy
An Information Strategist monitors the strategic issues concerning the library and information sectors nationally and internationally, and advises the National Library.
This role includes participation in advising Ministers, liaison with other government agencies on information strategy matters, liaison with non-government professional bodies nationally and internationally and representation, as appropriate, on behalf of the National Library or New Zealand government on information society issues.
