National Library realigns organisation following consultation

The National Library of New Zealand today advised changes to its organisational structure following consultation with its staff.

"The National Library is operating in an increasingly digital environment and our services need to reflect this," says Penny Carnaby, National Librarian and Chief Executive of the National Library.

"We have also looked for operational improvements as part of the review, and have fully engaged staff in this process".

Ms Carnaby advised that the changes are part of the National Library’s ongoing transformation programme going back to 2007, and which is focused on enabling the Library to meet the changing needs of its customers.

The new structure has resulted in 27 new positions being established, mostly in the digital area, while 24 staffed positions have been disestablished. There will also be changes to reporting lines for a small number of staff within the Alexander Turnbull Library. Frontline services remain unchanged. The changes will be effective from 30 April 2009.

A proposal for structural change was presented to staff in early February for consultation. This addressed proposed changes to the National Library's National Digital Library, the Alexander Turnbull Library and the Finance and Property Services Division.

Ms Carnaby advised that there may be up to ten redundancies.

"Our priority is to seek redeployment opportunities for affected staff, prior to the commencement of recruitment for the new roles."
