18 February 2009: National Library consultation for music services

The National Library of New Zealand is currently reviewing their music collections and services. This is part of the Library's wider New Generation National Library Strategy, which was commenced in 2007, and will see the Library adapt its services to make all collections, valued at almost $1 billion, more accessible and ensure their long-term safety.

The adaptation of services is necessary as the National Library enhances access, including digital access, to the valuable collection of New Zealand, Maori and Pacific cultural heritage and taonga. This is in line with our purpose of collecting, preserving, protecting and providing access to collections, particularly relating to New Zealand, as described in the National Library of New Zealand Act 2003.

The music collections are being reviewed in terms of their relevance to the New Zealand and Pacific focus and will consider options for the delivery of services related to the General Music Collection.

The National Library is committed to discussing any proposed changes to services with people and organisations interested and are on track to commence this consultation in the first quarter of 2009 as intended.
