17 September 2009: New appointments to National Library advisory bodies LIAC and Guardians Kaitiaki

The Library is delighted that the Minister Responsible for the National Library of New Zealand, Hon Nathan Guy, has today announced new appointments to the Library and Information Commission of New Zealand (LIAC) and Guardians Kaitiaki. Both bodies had four members whose terms expired in 2009.

The unincorporated advisory bodies were established under the National Library of New Zealand (Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa) Act 2003. They meet at the National Library in Wellington at least three times per year.

The purpose of LIAC is to provide information to the Minister on library and information issues, including mātauranga Māori.

The Guardians purpose is to provide assurance that Alexander Turnbull Library's collections are held in perpetuity and are preserved and made accessible for all the people of New Zealand.

Don Hunn (Chair), a senior diplomat and previous State Services Commissioner, and Sue Roberts, a librarian from Victoria University, have been newly appointed to LIAC. Dr Brian Pauling and Bill Macnaught have been reappointed.

Shimrath Paul (Chair), currently Chief Executive of Otago Museum, and Professor Raewyn Dalziel, a New Zealand historian from Auckland University, have been newly appointed to the Guardians Kaitiaki. Dr Monty Soutar and Professor Mark Apperley have been reappointed.

All members have been appointed because of their special knowledge or qualifications that are relevant to the purpose and functions of the bodies.
