17 November 2008: Introducing the Strategic Advisory Forum

The Strategic Advisory Forum to the National Library is a cross-library and information sector panel whose objective is to provide independent advice to the Chief Executive/National Librarian on strategies, challenges and emerging opportunities to benefit the wider New Zealand library sector. In addition it provides a forum for the Library and Information Association Aotearoa (LIANZA) and Te Rōpū Whakahau to engage with the different sectors of the library and information world.

The forum represents the thinking of each of the sectors in the library industry, giving the libraries of New Zealand a voice in identifying the critical strategic issues that the National Library needs to take into account in fulfilling its obligations under the Act.

"The Strategic Advisory Forum is an invaluable opportunity to discuss the future landscape for the library and information sector in New Zealand." Penny Carnaby – CE and National Librarian

The Strategic Advisory Forum consists of representatives from the following: LIANZA, Te Rōpū Whakahau (Māori in Libraries and Information Management), the Council for New Zealand University Libraries (CONZUL), the School Libraries Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (SLANZA), the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics of New Zealand (ITPNZ), the Association of Public Library Managers (APLM), NZ Law Librarians Association (NZLLA), Health Special Interest Group (Health SIG), Government Information Group (GIG) and the Parliamentary Library.

The Strategic Advisory Forum has met three times since its inception. At its last meeting held on 9 October the group identified the top priorities for the attention of National Library as school libraries, the position of documentary heritage collections in New Zealand, prison libraries, information literacy as a foundation learning skill, and copyright and IP issues.
