10 August 2007: National Library appoints Deputy Chief Executive

Penny Carnaby, Chief Executive and National Librarian of the National Library has announced the appointment of Sue Sutherland as Deputy Chief Executive.

As Deputy Chief Executive, Mrs. Sutherland will lead the National Library’s policy and strategy work as well as be responsible for the Library’s ongoing relationships with Government. She will also lead the day-to-day business activities of the organisation.

Penny Carnaby said, "I am delighted to appoint a top leader to the position of Deputy Chief Executive. Since joining the Library in 2005 as Director of Policy and Information Democracy Sue has exceeded expectations. I couldn’t have asked for a more suitable Deputy Chief Executive."

Mrs. Sutherland is highly regarded by the library and information profession both within New Zealand and internationally. In April this year she was awarded a Leadership Development Centre Fellowship that recognised her as one of New Zealand's leading public servants.

She brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Recently she has led the development of the draft New Zealand Digital Content Strategy and this year also organised the first New Zealand Public Libraries Summit.

Mrs. Sutherland has always worked in libraries and is passionate about them. She has worked her way up through libraries, being employed as a Librarian before moving to management positions.

Sue Sutherland will begin her role as Deputy Chief Executive on Monday 6 August.
