4 August 2008: New family history resources

The National Library has recently subscribed to 'Origins Total Access', a fantastic resource that incorporates three databases of U.K. records: British, Irish, and Scottish Origins.

Records dating from the 13th century can be searched or digitised images viewed and printed off. A great number of collections are covered including including the England and Wales Census 1841, 1861, and 1871, and Griffith's Primary Valuation of Ireland.

You can access the databases in the Family History Collection area on the Library's ground floor.

Historical Australian newspapers online

The National Library of Australia (NLA) has released a beta (test) version of its new website of digitised newspapers. Researchers who use the National Library's Papers Past website are likely to find this website very useful.

Although only a relatively small amount of content is currently available, the site includes digitised pages from more than 10 newspapers, published between 1803 and 1945.

More content will be added over time. The NLA welcomes feedback on the site.
