Te wiki o te Reo Māori
The National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa is proud to celebrate this year's Te wiki o te Reo Māori theme of Te Reo i te Hapori Māori Language in the Community with displays, music and the release of bilingual search interface (te reo Māori and English) from Digital New Zealand.
Māori language in wartime communities
This display in the National Library foyer showcases the depth and richness of Māori language in wartime communities here in New Zealand and abroad. The research notes of early Pākehā New Zealanders such as Thomas Bernard Collinson (1822-1902) reveal the sacred war chants used in inter-tribal warfare. The personal correspondence of Māori such as Lieutenant Horopapera Karauti of Ngāti Raukawa to his fiancé Wai during World War I show touching sentiments expressed entirely in te reo. These taonga are brought together with newspaper articles, printed music, postcards and photographs to show the breadth of Māori language across time and place but also to remember the sacrifice of generations of New Zealanders in time of war.
Recently published books in Māori
This display in foyer of a small selection of recently published books in te reo Māori, from the National Children’s Collection reveals how tTe reo Māori publishing for children has increased over recent years, with information books, novels and even graphic novels joining the steady stream of picture books.
