The Strategic Framework was developed by the National Library in collaboration with Local Government New Zealand and New Zealand’s public libraries (represented by the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) and MetroNet Inc).

The Framework is intended for all New Zealand’s public libraries –regardless of size or location – and focuses on what is required to support them to contribute to the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of an increasingly diverse New Zealand population in the 21st century.

The Framework

  • outlines the roles public libraries play in achieving community outcomes
  • seeks to provide a direction for investment in public libraries as a key service of local government
  • aims to develop a commonly held view of the future of public libraries.

The New Zealand Public Libraries Summit, an initiative arising from the Public Libraries Strategic Framework, was held in February 2007.
