OSMOSIS is a software tool that identifies changes (additions and deletions) to library holdings. The National Library is collaborating with American based company The Marc of Quality to test the performance of OSMOSIS in the New Zealand environment.

Seven libraries took part in the pilot project in 2008-09, including one public library, the National Library, four universities, and one consortium. They were:

  • Porirua Public Library
  • National Library of New Zealand
  • Auckland University
  • AUT University
  • Canterbury University
  • Victoria University

ELGAR - Libraries for a Greater Auckland Region

  • Waitakere Library & Information Services
  • Auckland City Libraries
  • Manukau Libraries
  • North Shore Libraries
  • Rodney Libraries.

The Pilot Project successfully developed processes and workflows to maintain unity of library holdings on library local catalogues and the National Union Catalogue.

OSMOSIS developments are continuing through 2009-2010. The OSMOSIS software is being enhanced and improvements to workflows are underway so that the OSMOSIS Service can be made available as a service to more New Zealand libraries.

OSMOSIS is proving to be efficient software for the batch update of files and maintaining currency and accuracy of New Zealand library holdings on the National Union Catalogue.

This quality of information now flows on to OCLC's WorldCat, an international database containing the collections of libraries around the world. Greater accuracy of New Zealand library holdings supports interlibrary loan and resource sharing.
