Since 1840 iwi Māori and the government have engaged in an evolutionary relationship developed through reference to the Treaty of Waitangi.
The Alexander Turnbull has collected materials, including items about Māori and in the Māori language, for more than 90 years. Māori scholars know the value of the collections held by ATL, use them and like all Māori have delighted in materials being available online.
Te Kaupapa Mahi Tahi - A Plan for Partnership 2005-2010 is the strategic policy document that guides the Library’s relationships with Māori, and is a core integrating component of the National Library’s Strategic Directions to 2017.

The Bicultural Implementation Plan 2010-2012 describes how the principles affirmed in Te Kaupapa Mahi Tahi will be brought to life in the Library’s practice, through specific initiatives connected to the Library’s overall strategic priorities.
It builds on achievements made over the last 10 years and is based on dialogue with iwi and Māori, and the recent quantitative and qualitative customer research carried out by Colmar Brunton.

This plan ensures that the Library is integrated and aligned in engagements with iwi. It is the first step of a renewed process. It is a living document that will move the Library from compliance to creativity through achievements.
