Matapihi website

The National Library is leading the development of Matapihi in collaboration with partner organisations throughout New Zealand.

The purpose of Matapihi is to promote New Zealand culture and heritage, and in particular to showcase together cultural organisations and their heritage collections online.

Matapihi lets people search across over 150,000 pictures, objects, sounds, movies and texts. It is a virtual window onto the places, events and people of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Search for 'tuatara', for example, and you can bring together:

  • historical film footage showing a tuatara, recorded in 1934
  • a rotatable 3D view of a museum specimen
  • photographs of live tuatara at the Auckland zoo
  • a link to an e-text explaining the history of tuatara research in New Zealand
  • a poster advertising the Flying Nun music compilation Tuatara on LP in 1985.

Matapihi began as a pilot project of New Zealand’s National Digital Forum – museums, archives, art galleries, educational institutions, libraries and government departments working together to enhance access to New Zealand’s digital culture and heritage.
