At 5pm on 3 December 2009, access to Alexander Turnbull Library collections will close.

On Tuesday 8 December, access to some Alexander Turnbull copied materials will recommence through a reading room at 77 Thorndon Quay, Wellington.

On Thursday, 25 February 2010, access to many high-use Alexander Turnbull Library materials will recommence at Archives New Zealand, 10 Mulgrave Street, Wellington.

Collection access at 77 Thorndon Quay, Wellington from 8 December 2009

From Tuesday 8 December, access to some Turnbull materials will be available through a reading room at 77 Thorndon Quay, Wellington, including:

  • Turnbull Library Pictures
  • Newspaper microfilms
  • Index and reference tools
  • Special Printed Collections microfilm
  • Electronic resources.

Collection access at Archives New Zealand from 25 February 2010

From Thursday, 25 February 2010, access to many high-use Alexander Turnbull Library materials will be available at Archives New Zealand, 10 Mulgrave Street, Wellington. This includes:

  • Most of the Manuscripts Collection of personal papers, including letters, journals and diaries, and organisational records. The Archive of New Zealand Music and manuscript microfilms will also be available.
  • The Special Printed Collections of rare and early books, including the Milton Collection.
  • Prints from the Evening Post, Whites Aviation, War History and War Effort photographic collections.
  • A selection of materials previously requested by researchers, spanning the Turnbull collections.
  • Selected Oral History materials, including abstracts (guides to the content of interviews and other materials), and access copies of some sound and video recordings.
  • Publications including the New Zealand Pamphlet Collection, Books in Māori and the Mansfield collection.
  • Lesbian and Gay Archives manuscripts (LAGANZ).
  • The Andersen and Reed Place Names Indexes.
  • The National Library’s Dorothy Neal White Collection of children’s books published prior to 1940.

Closed Alexander Turnbull Library collections

Some Alexander Turnbull Library collections will close from 5pm on 3 December 2009, for the duration of the building redevelopment.

Original items

Some Alexander Turnbull Library collections will close to the public for the duration of the building redevelopment This includes most of the items within the Oral History, Ephemera, maps and photographic collections, along with the Drawings, Paintings and Prints Collection, which includes cartoons and architectural drawings. The New Zealand and Pacific and the Turnbull General collections of books, newspapers and serials will also close.

Copies of items

Some pictorial material from within the collections that are closed is available online, or in some cases, copies are available in physical form onsite at Thorndon Quay. Additionally, more items – particularly from the maps, Oral History and photographic collections – will become progressively available during the redevelopment through digitisation and preservation activities.

Copies of publications from within the New Zealand and Pacific and Turnbull General collections may be available through the National Library collections, or the collections of other libraries within New Zealand and internationally. Our staff will be able to help you with information on specific items that you may request.

Services available at Archives New Zealand from 25 February 2010

Archives New Zealand will be home to some Turnbull Library curatorial and research services staff, who will provide services from Archives New Zealand’s reading rooms. You will also have access to digital collections and finding aids.
