- Scalable
- Ability of a system (typically computer systems) to respond to growth.
- School Services Centre
- Centre that provides advisory information and support for school libraries. There are 14 through the country and they include the three collection centres in Auckland, Palmerston North and Christchurch. Also known as National Library Service centres.
- Serials
- Anything published regularly, such as magazines, journals or newspapers.
- Software
- Programmes and instructions that direct a computer. Contrast with hardware.
- Special collection(s)
- Collections of rare books and archive materials in a library, or collections centered around particular people or special interest topics. For example, the Dorothy Neal White Collection is a special collection focused on children's literature.
- Stamp
- A term in bookbinding. A finishing tool bearing figures or patterns in relief, used to impress designs into the covering material.
- Strategy
- Plan or method towards achieving a goal or objective.
- Subject cataloguing
- To describe what a book or other publication is about using subject terms.
- Sublimation
- The conversion of an element or substance from its solid state to its gas state without passing through the liquid stage (i.e. from ice to water vapour without turning into water in between).
