- CBD
- Acronym standing for Central Business District.
- Call mark
- Characters written on a book or assigned to an item in a library collection, typically used to indicate where the item is located on the shelf.
- Card catalogue
- List of what a library holds in its collections. The list is put on cards. Most card catalogues have now been replaced by electronic catalogues.
- Caricatures
- Humorous illustration that exaggerates or distorts the characteristics of a person or thing, creating an easily identifiable visual likeness.
- Catalogue
- Organised listings of books and other materials in a library. Also 'to catalogue': to create a description for an item in the listing.
- Catalogue records
- Descriptions of each item in a library, such as its title, who created it, and what topics it covers. A collection of catalogue records make up a catalogue.
- Chapman codes
- Codes used by researchers to concisely and consistently record places where events take place. The Chapman Codes were devised by Colin Chapman and relate to pre-1974 United Kingdom counties.
- Chromolithograph
- Type of colour printing. A different stone is used to print each color (lithos means stone in Greek). Used to describe a large number of prints produced during the second half of the 19th century until around 1910.
- Classification
- Organising the items and materials of the library into categories.
- Closed shelves
- Storage areas that only library staff can access. Opposite of open shelves, where items you can use immediately are located.
- Collection
- Materials and items brought together in the Library because they come from the same place, or share something in common.
- Collection centre
- Centre where National Library Schools Collection resources are held. There are three in New Zealand: Auckland, Palmerston North and Christchurch.
- Conservation
- The work done on an item to treat deterioration, damage and decay.
- Copy prints
- Photographic prints made from negatives that are themselves photos of other photographic prints.
- Crown
- The New Zealand government.
- Curriculum Information Services
- Part of the Library responsible for providing a broad range of print and online information resources to support teaching and learning in New Zealand schools.
